Rónán Murray at the 1896 George Benson organ of St. Joseph’s Church, Glasthule, Co. Dublin.
For the day that’s in it, and as we approach the centenary of the Somme bloodbath, it’s sobering to reflect on how far Europe has come since our nations set out to work with one another. The Brexit Leave campaign had more than the whiff of Victorian jingoism about it, so it’s fitting to play Arthur Sullivan’s hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers”, a tune that was mercilessly parodied in the slaughter of the trenches. My heartfelt wish is that the British people do not suffer as badly as predicted from this sad outcome to an ill-judged, internal party politics based referendum.
